Embedding and assessing student sustainability competences holistically

Embedding and assessing student sustainability competences holistically

Vasiliki Kioupi (School of Earth and Environment) and Clare Jackson (Sustainability Service)

Project Overview

The main research question of our project is: How can sustainability competences be conceptualised, developed and assessed in more contextualised and inclusive ways? and is aligned with the Sustainable Curriculum principle of the University's Climate Plan. The research will involve three case studies around curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular applications of the frameworks and tools developed using experiential learning.
We plan to work with students and colleagues to co-create the frameworks for competence conceptualisation, and innovative tools of assessment. The main anticipated outcomes are for students to articulate clearly the sustainability competences they are developing and enable their future success and for colleagues to embed them in their modules and assessments.

The research approach

We are taking an interdisciplinary approach in this research engaging academic and professional staff and from different disciplines and communities of practice across the institution for a more inclusive conceptualisation of sustainability competences, and we will engage our students, including our Student Sustainability Architects, in further designing the research questions, methods and materials. We will implement three case studies in which we will collect data through quantitative and qualitative tools for competence embeddedness and assessment that we will co-develop with groups of staff and students and at the end we will implement focus groups/listening rooms to gauge the impact of the research project on students and staff.
