Share, Adapt, Adopt: Enhancing Language Skills

Date
Date
Tuesday 2 April 2019, 12:00 to 13:00
Venue
Research Room 1, level 13, Edward Boyle Library, University of Leeds

THE VALUE of improving language skills of teachers to boost pupil learning will be the focus of the next ‘Share, Adopt, Adapt’ themed workshop organised by the Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence (LITE).

The event: ‘Enhancing Language Skills’ will be delivered by LITE Fellows Helen Sadig and Professor Cecile De Cat who are currently working on a LITE project around improving language pedagogy training.

The presentation will look at how through the University of Leeds Students into Schools programme, there is a direct opportunity to enhance the language analysis skills of students from any academic discipline.

It will also explore how language analysis skills underpins mathematical reasoning and the reporting and interpretation of statistical information.

LITE Fellow Professor De Cat, said: "Most school teachers have little or no training in language analysis, and language analysis is not assessed adequately, for example, at GCSE level.

"As a result, most students entering University education have little understanding of how language works.  This creates a hurdle for the learning of foreign languages, but also for academic achievement in general.

We hope to explore how by enhancing language skills we can directly and positively affect student learning across every subject.

Professor Tina Overton, Director at LITE, said:

"Our Share, Adapt, Adopt' events are already proving a popular and useful way of sharing the exciting and interesting research work of our LITE Fellows.

"Language skills are fundamental to all effective learning, so I'm very much looking forward to listening to Helen and Cecile's presentation on this area of work."
