Living in Student Accommodation: Identifying best practice in order to support students with accessibility requirements

About the student researcher
Hello, my name is Oriana, but most people call me Ori! I graduated in July 2023 with a BA in Politics and Sociology (International), and now I’m studying an LLM in International Human Rights Law, both from the University of Leeds. My current research interests are forced migration studies, disability studies, and domestic and international human rights law. I’m also writing my dissertation on reasonable adjustments in the Equality Act 2010 and whether the way they are currently perceived in law enhances or decreases justice. Due to both my academic and personal experience, and after four years at the University of Leeds (and a study abroad year at KU Leuven), I know how important it is to feel accepted, supported and at home in university accommodation. I’m sure it seems somewhat cliché to say, but I genuinely feel very honoured to be able to research, assess and hopefully improve current accessibility practices in university accommodation. Ultimately, I really hope that my research project will help more students feel more at home and supported, whilst also showcasing the many good things that staff at the University already currently do.
Project overview
My project focuses on establishing and reviewing best practice in order to support students in University of Leeds accommodation with accessibility requirements. To do this, my methodology involves three key aspects: a literature review, website analysis, and interviews with staff from varying teams in Residential Services. Outputs will include a research report, recommendations and potentially presentations to the relevant internal teams.
