Tanya Hathaway

Tanya is a Higher Education Research and Support Officer at LITE, where she provides guidance to LITE Incubator Leads and Fellows, conducts research and contributes to the broader discussion on student enhancement and educational evaluation. Acting as a mentor and advisor, Tanya enjoys collaborating with colleagues throughout their research experiences from inception to impact.

Tanya’s experience in teaching and research in higher education spans a variety of contexts, with lecturing and leadership experience in the UK, Australia, and the international higher education sector. Her teaching has focused predominantly on graduate education, leading and designing Masters level programmes with a focus on quality teaching in higher education. Her contributions to the field of educational research focus on students’ and academics’ epistemological beliefs in different disciplines and their experiences of teaching and learning in higher education across various contexts. These experiences helped to strengthen her understanding of education, which now informs her approach to supporting colleagues.

Before working in higher education, Tanya’s professional background was in Secondary and further education, with a particular focus on teaching information technology and geography, as well as working in the mining, oil and gas sector. She completed her PhD in Geology at the University of Cardiff, with research focusing on compressional structures and the development of thrust faults. Following a personal paradigm shift to the field of education, she completed a PhD at Bangor University, exploring academics’ personal epistemological beliefs and relationships to their approaches to teaching, combining a qualitative phenomenographic research approach with statistical analyses.
