Matthew supports the research of LITE fellows with an emphasis on effective and robust research design. He also conducts research which centres what this means in the context of pedagogical research.
His current work focuses on the frameworks that pedagogical research uses to understand its research questions, data, and impact. This involves designing effective strategies to interrogate our assumptions during the research design process; asks how a topic, largely researched by non-specialists, can critically and confidently engage with its ontological and epistemic frameworks; and brings both theory and data to bear on what generalisable research on the student experience might look like.
Matthew completed his PhD in the philosophy of science in 2021 at Cardiff University where he worked on understanding replicability and the role of theoretical frameworks for grounding robust data analysis and clear conclusions. This work utilised statistical approaches and theoretical analysis to design practical interventions to improve replicability.
Before joining LITE in 2025, Matthew worked at Leeds University Union supporting and enabling student voice structures through co-creational approaches and fostering student-led change. In this time, he supported students to challenge assumptions about what successful engagement with programme materials looks like, build co-curricular communities, and spark conversations about delivering a ‘uniquely Leeds’ postgraduate researcher experience.
He is always happy to have a conversation with prospective fellows or anyone interested in effective research design in a pedagogical research context.
