spotLITE workshop: Addressing barriers to acceptance and use of XR in teaching
- Date
- Tuesday 29 October 2024, 10:00-12:30
- Location
- HELIX classroom
Our next spotLITE workshop, open to all professional services and teaching staff, is led by Gabriel Jones, who will be taking us through the findings of his LITE fellowship. In this in-person session, you’ll learn about staff experience and attitudes towards using fully-immersive virtual reality (VR) at the University, and hear his suggestions for improved engagement with VR and extended reality (XR) more broadly.
Gabriel’s fellowship research includes a University-wide survey, and nine semi-structured interviews with expert practitioners. He’ll share the results, which include qualitative data surrounding VR and XR use cases, perceived challenges and benefits, and strategic suggestions for implementation.
You’ll leave this workshop with an insight into the key concerns and challenges in improving staff engagement with existing XR provisions. On top of that, you’ll be invited to consider how you might include or support the use of immersive technologies as part of your own practice – whether in teaching, scholarship or other student education work.
You’ll also have the opportunity to try an educational VR experience using a head-mounted display. This can be done whilst sitting, and there will also be an alternative screen-based presentation for anyone not wishing to use the headsets.
Timings:
- 10:00-12:00: Workshop with 15-minute coffee break
- 12:00-12:30: Networking lunch (provided)
Gabriel is planning to lead University-wide VR inductions and other awareness-raising and engagement-focussed events, so if this workshop piques your interest, he’ll let you know how you can participate in more events in the future.
Please note that this event is for in-person attendance only. If you have any queries, please contact us at LITE@leeds.ac.uk.
