BRIDGING THE the gap across science and art in teaching and learning to benefit students and staff is the subject of the next LITE Masterclass.

Associate Professor Chris Thompson, Dean for Education of Science at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, will deliver the session: 'The Science/Art Nexus – a trans-disciplinary approach' as the latest in the Institute's series of workshops.

Dr Thompson, who also teaches chemistry across all levels including to a first year cohorts of over 1200 students, has already successfully collaborated with academics in Drama to boost learning in undergraduates.

In his LITE Masterclass he will describe how such trans-disciplinary collaborations can be beneficial to all students and staff involved.

He said:

Within the 'Science/Art Nexus there often seems to be a 'chasm between teaching and learning, however, each has much to learn from he other to enrich the learning experiences and skills and capabilities of undergraduates by exposing them to ways of working in these very different disciplines.

Dr Thompson's research lies in the field of Chemistry and Science Education, with a focus on areas such as inquiry-based and problem-based learning, the use of representations, active learning and alternative learning strategies especially in large classes, transferable skill development and graduate employability.

Professor Tina Overton, Director at LITE, said:

The discourse and evidence around trans-disciplinary teaching and learning makes fascinating reading. It is a subject that is evolving rapidly across higher education around the world

"Chris’s talk aligns well with the priorities at Leeds for interdisciplinary learning and we are both delighted and excited in equal measure to welcome him and listen to what he has to say on this important subject."

The Institute, nearly into its third year, provides funding, time and support for current and future student education leaders to develop their profile at the University of Leeds and to carry out research and innovation projects with internal and external impact.
