Developing your intercultural and linguistic awareness

Yolanda Cerdá and Jenna Isherwood from LITE's Internationalising Student Education Network discuss how cultural assumptions impact the university experience for international students.

This workshop is for academics and staff who are interested in exploring and understanding linguistic and cultural barriers that some students may encounter during their time studying with us. The workshop will be divided into two parts. In the first part, we will discuss ways in which our own UK academic cultural assumptions may impact on diverse student cohorts as well as the potential effects of (English) language and communication on successful interactions.

We will also touch on how this may or may not be affected by digital environments and practices. In the second part, there will be an opportunity to hear from a range of current Leeds international students, including foundation year, undergraduate, taught postgraduate and postgraduate research students on their intercultural experiences of studying at the UoL and living in Leeds. There should be time for staff to discuss the issues raised and ask questions. Please feel free to bring your lunch along 🙂
